Recap: City of Pittsburg Celebrates Central Harbor Park and Boat Launch Facility Grand Reopening

The City of Pittsburg proudly cut the rope today on the newly transformed Central Harbor Park and Boat Launch Facility, unveiling a long-awaited, community-driven upgrade to one of the East Bay's most beloved waterfront destinations. Residents, boaters, anglers, hunters, elected officials, and project partners gathered this evening at the park to mark the culmination of years of planning, collaboration, and construction on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta's shoreline.

"Hello and welcome to this very exciting Grand Opening ceremony at the beautiful Central Harbor Park and Boat Launch," said Pittsburg City Manager Darin Gale, who emceed the celebration. "I love my job. I love what we do together and seeing improvements happen in the community right in front of my eyes. This kind of celebration is one of my favorites as a local government employee."

The newly reimagined park now features ADA-accessible walking paths, a striking new shade structure with modern seating, a public safety substation serving both Pittsburg police and other agencies patrolling the Delta, secure fencing around the boater parking lot, freshly repaved and striped parking areas, a fish cleaning station and upgraded fishing amenities along the jetty, enhanced lighting, a bank of public fire pits, and two brand-new Exeloo public restrooms.

The project traces its roots to 2021, when the City first partnered with the SacramentoSan Joaquin Delta Conservancy to fund the planning phase through the Conservancy's Proposition 68-funded Community and Economic Enhancement Grant Program. Over nearly three years, the City used that $172,155 planning grant to engage the community through surveys, in-person workshops, and a hands-on "Plan A Park!" event, gathering input from local residents, daily parkgoers, boaters, fishermen, hunters, and neighbors. 65 Civic Avenue Pittsburg, CA 94565 P: (925) 252-6900 F: (925) 252-4814 pittsburgca.gov Three priorities emerged clearly and consistently: upgraded amenities, improved safety and security, and new things to do at the park.

Building on that momentum, the City went on to secure a second, transformative $3.54 million grant from the Delta Conservancy's Climate, Access, and Resource (CAR) Program to fund construction of the very improvements celebrated at today's grand opening.

A Standout Partnership with the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy

City leaders reserved special praise for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy, whose vision and investment made the transformation possible. "Thank you to the Delta Conservancy for believing in our project, considering Pittsburg a worthwhile location for a large investment," said City Manager Gale. "You have been an excellent partner as evidenced by this outstanding community resource, and we look forward to many projects in the future."

Mayor Dionne Adams echoed that gratitude in her remarks at the ceremony. "To the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy, we are grateful for your contribution and attention to this remarkable project that will have a lasting impact on our community and its relationship with the Delta," Mayor Adams said.

Mayor Adams noted that local residents, boaters, sportsmen, daily parkgoers, marina customers, and Yacht Club members have long considered Central Harbor Park a treasured gem, a home, and a reminder of home, for generations of Pittsburg families. "For those that haven't grown up here, we smile when we hear them say, 'wow, this is in Pittsburg?'" she said. "Yes. Pittsburg is beautiful. And yes, Pittsburg is deserving of the outstanding amenities you see here."

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy was represented at the ceremony by Deputy Executive Officer Karen Buhr, alongside Delta Conservancy staff Community Projects Supervisor Martha Ozonoff and Ecological and Community Program Analyst Maya Garrett — key partners whose support helped guide the project from concept to completion. 65 Civic Avenue Pittsburg, CA 94565 P: (925) 252-6900 F: (925) 252-4814 pittsburgca.gov

Following the ribbon-cutting, guests enjoyed light refreshments, fishing along the jetty, a photo station, the park's new fire pits, and tours of the Police Department's substation. City officials invite Pittsburg residents to make Central Harbor Park part of their everyday lives as a stop on the daily walking route, a favorite fishing spot, a hometown hangout, a launch point for a hunting trip, or even the site of a future celebration.
