Post Date:04/16/2026 1:12 PM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The City of Pittsburg has earned notable recognition in the American Lung Association’s State of Tobacco Control 2026, California Local Grades report, receiving commendation for its strong and proactive public health policies aimed at reducing tobacco use and protecting residents from secondhand smoke.

The annual report evaluates cities and counties across California on the strength of their tobacco control policies, grading communities on measures such as reducing youth access to tobacco products, ensuring smokefree environments, and implementing comprehensive protections for residents living in multi-unit housing. The 2026 evaluation places Pittsburg among the cities making meaningful progress in advancing community health through local policy.

Significance of the State of Tobacco Control Report

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. The American Lung Association’s report serves as a statewide benchmark, highlighting cities that have made significant strides in prevention and offering guidance for communities still working to strengthen protections.

The report also underscores the ongoing need for local action, particularly as new nicotine products, flavored items, and vaping devices continue to target younger populations. Communities like Pittsburg that have adopted strong policies are helping set a statewide standard for prevention and long-term public health improvements.

A Community-Wide Effort to Reduce Tobacco Harm

Pittsburg was highlighted for a series of impactful policy actions that reflect a coordinated effort involving City leadership, community advocates, and public health professionals working collectively to reduce the influence of tobacco in the community.

These local policies include:

  • Adoption of a comprehensive tobacco retail licensing ordinance designed to prevent underage access to tobacco and vape products
  • Implementation of smokefree outdoor air policies that reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in public spaces, parks, and other shared environments; and
  • Protections for residents in multi-unit housing, reducing smoke drift between units and supporting healthier living conditions for families and seniors

“Protecting the health of our residents has always been a top priority,” said Pittsburg Mayor Dionne Adams. “These efforts reflect the progress Pittsburg has made in safeguarding our youth and strengthening the overall health of our community. This is no small achievement; it speaks to the commitment of our residents, businesses, and City leadership to create a healthier environment for everyone.”

Looking Ahead

Darin Gale, Pittsburg’s City Manager stated, “Pittsburg will continue to ensure our local ordinances reflects an ongoing commitment to fostering a healthier and more resilient community. The City will continue to evaluate policies, working with residents to identify opportunities for further improvement.”
