FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PITTSBURG, CA – On January 30th, the City of Pittsburg officially broke ground on Pittsburg Premier Fields, marking a significant milestone in the City's efforts to provide local recreational opportunities and boost sports tourism. The first multi-sport field, connection to existing walking trails, a traffic signal at West Leland Road near John Henry Johnson Parkway, and a parking lot constitute this initial phase of construction. At full buildout, the facility is slated for eight multi-use fields and an outdoor track with lighting, expanded parking facilities, and a plaza.
“We are thrilled to see the Premier Fields project take shape. This is another positive step forward for Pittsburg, as it will not only provide our residents with top-notch sports facilities, but also aid in creating a destination for sports tourism. This project is a great example of the vision and commitment of our City Council to invest in our youth and to also spur greater economic opportunities in the City,” said Mayor Jelani Killings.
While the City is actively pursuing funding for future phases, City Manager Garrett Evans notes that this first phase – and likely, future phases – are made possible in part by Measure M, the City’s voter-approved 1/2-cent sales tax, which received nearly 80% support when on the ballot in 2016, as well as development of the City’s first Technology Campus and grants.
The Premier Fields Project aligns with the City Council’s long-standing emphasis on youth development, which has also led to the creation of the Dream Courts basketball complex across the street, and the reopening of the Marina Community Center in 2023. Projects like Premier Fields and Dream Courts not only provide spaces for the community’s sports teams to play at home, but has the potential to further development of hotels, restaurants, retail businesses, and other positive economic development impacts that accompany sports tourism.
